Le GARDE DU COMMERCE - Jolie prison! on en sort et on ne peut plus y rentrer!
Title (alt.):
THE GUARD OF COMMERCE - Nice prison! once you are out there is no way to re-enter!. Charivari
Description:
The print shows a bailiff, the so called "Garde de Commerce". He had the right to arrest debtors on the street. After 1867, this practice was cancelled. Similar to the series “Les bons bourgeois” the Croquis Parisiens are dealing with numerous small misfortunes in the life of the Parisians. They were especially impressed by the possibilities opened by the railroad. Travels to the surroundings and the French province were both exciting and startling experiences.
