A player for the St. Louis Cardinals stands over a warm up base in foul territory at Sportsman Park in St. Louis, Missouri. He is holding a glove in one hand and the baseball in the other. Another baseball player lays to the left side of the warm up base with his right leg spread out in front of him so that it is touching the base. There are two men sitting on a bench behind them.
In this slide, the fielder is attempting to tag out an incoming sliding baserunner. The fielder has lifted their right foot up in the air in order to avoid the baserunner sliding into it since the baserunner has slid into the left side of the bag. This would be correct because it protects both the baserunner and the fielder because if the baserunner slid into the fielder's knee, there would be a higher chance of one of them getting injured in the play. Since the fielder's glove hand is located farther away from the baserunner than his non-throwing hand, the fielder has placed the ball in his right hand in order to attempt to tag the baserunner before he touches the base successfully. This would be correct as is represents the correct way to tag out the baserunner because it is the quickest and easiest way for the fielder to get a tag on the baserunner, which would maximize the chances of the fielder being able to tag out the baserunner before he is able to touch the base.
