Catherine Hirsch correspondence with Dr. Drábek and Vera Cerych, March-April 1963
Title (alt.):
Catherine M. Sugarman Letters
Jaroslav Drábek Letters
Description:
In this series of correspondences between Catherine Sugarman (Kate Hirsch) and Jaroslav Drábek, we see the discussion unfold about Drábek's earlier article about Helmut Hirsch. Jaroslav Drábek, a Czech lawyer and writer whose resistance to German occupiers and the Communists led to a broadcasting career. As Kate prepared her manuscript about her brother's life, she had reached out to Drábek. In his postcard, Drábek expresses his delight in reading her work and tells her to inform him of any mistakes in his article. In her response, Kate expresses her excitement in the news Walter Laqueuer gave her that he had found a decent amount of material about Helmut Hirsch in the Foreign Ministry Files. She also mentions that she has given Drábek's article to Wiliam Shirer. Throughout the correspondence, Kate further mentions that she needs more background information on the Black Front and about the dj.1.11. We also have letters between Kate and her cousin Vera Cerych. This letter and others found in the collection dealing with writings about Helmut's life show the careful custodianship Kate had on her brother's legacy.
