Community activists talk to Chinatown residents regarding the New England Medical Center's proposal to build a garage on Parcel C in Chinatown. In the 1990s, the New England Medical Center negotiated with the City of Boston to build a parking garage on Parcel C in Chinatown, land which had previously been promised to Chinatown residents for a community center. The Chinese Progressive Association helped form the Coalition to Protect Parcel C, which was instrumental in halting the New England Medical Center's plan. On September 12-13, 1993, Chinatown residents voted on a referendum regarding the New England Medical Center's proposal to build a parking garage on Parcel C. In this image, a woman talks into a bullhorn, near the intersection of Beach Street and Surface Road in Chinatown. In the right background, there are informational posters about the referendum on Parcel C.
