Alejandro A. Lanusse and Tomás Sánchez de Bustamante oral history with Robert A. Potash
Description:
Part 2 of 2) Interview between Robert Potash and General Alejandro Agustín Lanusse with the participation of General Tomás Sánchez Bustamante. Topics include Lanusse’s participation in the military overthrow of Arturo Illia on June 28, 1966, and the presidential periods and ousters of Onganía and Levingston. In the case of Onganía, Lanusse comments that the ex-president assumed power with unconditional support of the military, but then excluded them from government issues and was overthrown. Levingston was in power for around a year before the “Junta” took control. Lanusse refers to his own presidential period and describes his past intentions of forging a “Gran Acuerdo Nacional” (Great National Agreement), which would include Peronist forces and the army. He refers to Perón coming back to Argentina, his beliefs, and his party retaking the government. Lanusse is not optimistic about the Argentinian situation; he describes how the best solutions for certain issues, such as going back to democracy progressively, could not be applied, because of the interests and political pressures of diverse groups. The interview was originally recorded on two audiocassettes, and it cuts abruptly at a transition points on tape 1 at 00:30:44, before continuing. The sound quality is extremely poor, with loud white noise throughout.
