- En v'la un qu'est un drôle de corps.... y tire l'portrait d'un arbre qui n'produit seulement point des pommes... il est fou bé sur!...
Title (alt.):
- There's a strange body.... he is portraying a tree which doesn't produce any fruit... he must be crazy for sure!.... Charivari
Description:
A couple comments on an artist who is painting a picture of an apple tree. They don't see the point of painting a tree that has not yet produced any fruit. Daumier is illustrating in a charming manner the gap between Parisian landscape painters and farmers in the countryside. Their pastime is in a total contradiction to the hard work of the farmers, unable to understand the reason for painting landscapes. Daumier spent the summer of 1865 in Barbizon where he stayed with his friends Rousseau and Millet. There were very few contacts between the pragmatic farmer's family and the artist. They both seemed to be living in different, parallel worlds, which shows the estrangement between city and countryside. The Les Paysagistes series consists of only 3 prints which appeared in Le Charivari between December 9, 1864 and April 12, 1865.
