Nick has travelled closer to the front, he travelled across France by himself. He is now working in the finance department, he and a few other men are working out of a french hotel. Nick believes that moral standard of France is below that of the United States; there are many bars, everyone drinks wine, and women on the street ask you to go to their home. He has promised himself and Letty that he will not drink but it is difficult to find any water or soda to drink. The town that he is in utter darkness at night because of the air raids. Nick has been reading all of Letty's old letters, he gives her a new address to send any new mail to.
