A letter from John F. Hartwell from the Hartwell's of American to, most likely, Mabel Winn (Hartwell). The body of the letter reads, "Dear Cousin: This report should have been sent out a month ago, but circumstances made it impossible. I am not particularly proud of it, but I am more grateful to you loyal members who have responded so generously. I should report that the cost of publication has be upped, but I have been unable to obtain a definite figure yet. It is probably in the neighborhood of $300 now. 66 members have sent in their contributions, and the total now is $1113. $46 contributed before the "drive" began, raises the total to $1159. I am not admitting that the campaign has failed; but I am still hoping that some of the other 125 members may yet be heard from, but the situation is rather serious, and the proposed date of publication will have to be postponed. In my last report I rather facetiously suggested that the sponsors increase their contributions, if possible. This time I suggest it seriously, assuming that they are as much interested in the Genealogy as I am. Total required.. $3000 Paid in Jan. 1st, 1953.. $1113.00 Pain in before Sept., 1952..46.00 Total paid to Jan. 1953.. $1159.00 Total needed.. $1841.00 contributors and Contributions 3 @ $100.00 $300.00 2@ $50.00 $100.00 9@ $25.00 $225.00 46@ 10.00 $460.00 5@ 5.00 $25.00 1 @ 3.00 $3.00 66 Sponsors 1113.00 As of Jan.1st, I am sending out 200 more letters to members who have paid annual dues quite irregularly during the past 15 years. I assume that they, too, may be interested in having a book in print, and so we may hope soon for the substantial increase in our total amount. Cordially yours, John F. Hartwell"
