Hitting the trail with the Massachusetts Walking Tour
Description:
'This was a brief stop these hiking musicians made in Bellingham on a two-week tour through towns in and near the Blackstone Valley. As a group, they call themselves the Massachusetts Walking Tour, an annual trek on foot with all their gear, including musical instruments. They offer free community concerts in each town they visit, and have been doing this since 2009. I worked with the leaders of this group, Mark and Raianne, to plan their route, finding host families where they camped each night, and helped secure funding for the tour. They used my 'Easy Walks' books to chart their course, and offered public Easy Walks each day for participants to join them along the trail. This photo was taken after they had visited the High Street trail, an Easy Walk that takes visitors to the Charles River, about a half-mile walk through pine woodland. This trail is perhaps my favorite trail to walk in Bellingham. It was a joy having the Massachusetts Walking Tour http://masswalkingtour.org/ come to Bellingham and share not only their music, but their enthusiasm for the outdoors, and for getting out of the car and seeing the world on foot. I have lived in Bellingham nearly 40 years, and continue to be grateful for the welcome I have found that makes me call this home (even though I will never really be a New Englander!) I was Florida born, but came north for college (and snow!) and never left. It was a lucky day for me when I moved to Bellingham and found ways to give back and become part of the community.
