Comedian Joey Adams (left) and singer Johnny Desmond (right) have leading roles in “Play Me Hearts and Flowers,” a new television play about show business by David Shaw, which will be presented on the Philco Television Playhouse on Sunday evening, March 6, at 9 PM EST. Desmond, one of the fastest-rising young singers in the nation, will be playing a dramatic role in “Play Me Hearts and Flowers,” which tells the story of a highly successful comedy team which goes on the rocks after the singing member of the team (Desmond) realizes he is merely a stooge for the knockabout comic (Joey Adams). Ellen Cobb Hill portrays Desmond’s wife, and the cast also includes Kay Medford in a featured role. There are two rather unusual aspects of this particular show. “Play Me Hearts and Flowers” is the title of an actual song which Johnny Desmond has recorded for Coral Records, and which will be issued on Monday, March 7, the day after the television program. Because there is so much song and dance in the play, the Philco Television Playhouse – for the first time in its seven-year history– is telecasting “Play Me Hearts and Flowers” before a live audience. The Century Theatre in New York City has been taken over for the event.
