Letter from John Scott Porter, Ireland, to James Haughton and Samuel May, [1848]
Description:
The drafted "Reply to the Friends of Unitarian Christianity in Boston" is accompanied by an explanatory circular letter written by a committee of Unitarian ministers in Belfast. This circular letter, dated March 15, 1848 and signed "J. Scott Porter, Secretary of Committee," requests the support and signatures of Irish Unitarian ministers in refusing the invitation from Boston to attend the anniversary meeting of the American Unitarian Association. The letter, though supportive of American anti-slavery efforts, admonishes American Unitarians for denying "free coloured inhabitants of the United States, the participation of equal Rights and Privileges with their Fellow-citizens, as Members of the Church of Christ." An accompanying letter of transmittal is written by Porter to James Haughton on the top of the first page, in which Porter apologizes for the mildness of the Reply.
Holograph, signed, written on typescript form letter.
Notation in the hand of Samuel May on page two of the form letter reads, "Sent to S.M.Jr by James Haughton - to whom Mr. Porter had sent it."
The signatures of Irish ministers who approved the Reply appear on a separate leaf in the hand of Reverend Porter, dated 4th Ap., 1848.
