Description:
Minister at Watertown 1686 -- 1690. Portrait owned by Massachusetts Historical Society. John Bailey was born near Blackburn England in 1644. His religious mother influenced his future endeavors. He began to preach at the age of twenty-two. His fourteen years in Ireland affected his health which also included imprisonment for his"non-conformity in church matters." He settled in Watertown in 1686 and he remained her until his death in 1692. In 1691 he was deeply affected by the death of his wife and he was then "much afflicted by melancholy." Bailey was much sought after for his pleasing preaching ability by surrounding towns and the large attendece he received from members of other towns coming to Watertown to hear him speak. Later, do to his health, he became assistant minster until his death.
