![Here's the latest in checking... at Grand Central -- J. H. Hustis, Jr., Manager of Grand Central Terminal, New York looks over the brand new stramlined parcel checking locker room which has replaced the old East Luggage Room at Grand Central. With him is Frank Smith, New York District Manager for the American Locker Company. Mr. Hustis stated that since installation a constant stream of travelers has checked luggage in these new lockers. This new installation is one of many at Grand Central Terminal where, Mr. Hustis stated, there are already over 1800 parcel checking lockers, and when the program is completed, there will be practically 3000. The trend to lockers throughout the United States has been growing at a rapid rate since early war days, and Grand Central Terminal is only one of scores of places in the greater New York area where this modern method of parcel checking is available. In fact, there are over 2000 installations of parcel checking lockers throughout the country, and today they are to be found not only in rail and bus stations from coast to coast, but also in airports, department stores, theaters and other recreation centers.[paragraph break] Wartime travel conditions casued this habit of checking in lockers to spread rapidly. Millions of servicemen and women found that a few hours between trains could be much better enjoyed without toting heavy gear along.
