This print refers to the famous "La Roncière Affair", a court hearing which took place between June 29 and July 4, 1835 in Paris. Emile François Guillaume Clément de La Roncière (1804-1874) was accused of raping the 16 year old daughter of General de Saumur. The proceedings were followed by all of Paris, causing Daumier to avoid caricature and do his drawings directly in the court room "d'après nature". They were then immediately sent to the Charivari offices, where they were drawn on the lithographic stone by Julien. Victor Hugo also was present as a spectator.
