John Haynes Holmes Letters
Robert Morss Lovett Letters
Description:
John Haynes Holmes was a prominent Unitarian minister, pacifist, and co-founder of the NAACP and the ACLU. He served as vice -president of the NAACP until the end of his life. Throughout the Sacco and Vanzetti trial, Holmes was the leading clerical figure in opposition to their execution. In this letter to Robert Morss Lovett, Holmes agrees that it is crucial that the committee fight to get the Department of Justice files opened for the Sacco and Vanzetti case. He also notes that he will write a letter to Felix Frankfurter. Holmes sends a quote from a man from Cleveland to Lovett. The quote mentions how ballastics are important. In Cleveland, in the case of Frank Milazzo before a grand jury, a newspaper exposed the fact that the gun which the police relied on for conviction did not leave the factory until 18 days after the murder. This letter and many others in this collection highlight the flaws in the case of Sacco and Vanzetti.
