This lantern slide demonstrates an inappropriate way of throwing a baseball to the infield. In the slide, Mueller completes a side arm throw to the infield. However, a side arm throw is a much more difficult throw to make than a regular throw. It is often more difficult for a pitcher to retain accuracy when pitching a baseball sidearm, and a throw all the way from the outfield to the infield would be even more difficult to control. Mueller choosing to throw the ball side-arm increases the chances that the throw is inaccurate and doesn't reach his intended target. This is bad because if there are runners on base, then runners may be able to advance extra bases if Burns side arm throw is inaccurate.
Clarence Francis "Heinie" Mueller was born September 16, 1899, in Creve Coeur, Missouri. He was an American center and right fielder, playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants, Boston Braves, and the St. Louis Browns. He played in 693 games and had a batting average of .282 over the course of his career.
The image was likely taken at Sportsman Park, the field of the St. Louis Cardinals. However, compared to many of the images taken in 1922 at Sportsman Park, the advertisement in the background differs slightly. The advertisement is still in relation to American Quality Shoes, but the advertisement is different than in most images. Because of this, it is likely this slide was taken in either 1923 or 1924 rather than 1922.
Leslie Mann identifies the player in slide 283 as George Burns in his manual titled the Fundamentals of Baseball. However, the slide number 283 we have appears to be a different version of the slide 283 above as the player pictured is Mueller based on facial recognition. However, both slides 283 appear to be showing the same incorrect technique of throwing a baseball into the infield side arm.
Good condition;
This digital image is made from two separate digital scans; one scan of the lantern slide (reflective); one scan of the image (transparency); the two image were then combined in Photoshop to create the final image.
