Mueller demonstrates the incorrect method of fielding a ground ball hit to him in the outfield, as he drops on both knees to field the ground ball. This form is incorrect for multiple reasons. For one, if Mueller had misjudged the location of the baseball and had dropped to his knees, it would be very difficult for him to move and adjust his body to field the baseball cleanly and have it land in the pocket of his glove, which is important because it lowers the chances of making an error when Mueller transitions from fielding to throwing because the ball should remain in the pocket of the glove. He might not even to be able to field the baseball from this position if it is hit outside the reach of his glove because he would have difficulty adjusting his body from this position. Secondly, Mueller would not be able to throw the baseball from this position at full strength, and would need to stand first, which would take unnecessary time that would slow down his transition from fielding to throwing. If there were runners on base, this difference could allow a base runner to score instead of him being thrown out.
Clarence Francis "Heinie" Mueller was born September 16, 1899, in Creve Coeur, Missouri. He was an American center and right fielder, playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants, Boston Braves, and the St. Louis Browns. He played in 693 games and had a batting average of .282 over the course of his career.
There is very little information about the life of Heinie Mueller. The Society for American Baseball Research, which is the website where most of the information for the players represented in these slides has been found, does not have a page for Mueller.
I used facial recognition in slide 266 to identify the player here as Mueller.
Good condition;
This digital image is made from two separate digital scans; one scan of the lantern slide (reflective); one scan of the image (transparency); the two images were then combined in Photoshop to create the final image.
